Common Myths Associated With Coeliac Disease

If you are a newly diagnosed coeliac and you believe you’re about to embark on a life of “No Thanks” and “I Can’t’s” then hopefully these myths and truths will help clear the confusion around your new free from lifestyle!

Myth

Wheat glucose syrup, wheat dextrose and maltodextrin should be avoided at all costs on a gluten-free diet.

Although these ingredients are made from cereals which contain gluten. They have been processed so no gluten remains, therefore they’re safe.

Buckwheat is a form of wheat and so should be avoided.

Truth

Buckwheat is actually a herb, not a form of wheat and is tolerated by most coeliac sufferers and makes for a delicious meal.

Semolina is gluten-free.

Truth

Although semolina comes from the outer coat the wheat grain, thus why some may assume it’s gluten free when in fact it does indeed contain gluten. The majority of pasta on supermarket shelves is made from semolina.

Myth

You should only use gluten free shampoo and cosmetics.

Truth

Science has shown that gluten in shampoo and cosmetics is not a threat to those with coeliac disease– except for those that may be easily ingested, like lipstick or potentially hand lotion. Researchers have found that unless you have a deep and open wound, gluten cannot absorbed through the skin making topical items acceptable for use.

Myth

I won’t be able to have bread, pizza or pasta again!

Truth

As the number of Coeliacs being diagnosed rises this means the variety of gluten free food available in the supermarkets is also on the increase. Supermarkets now have dedicated Free From sections where you are sure to find all kinds of food that are suitable for your diet. Don’t be afraid to try baking at home also, freshly baked breads can be stored in your freezer and are very handy to have at hand when hunger strikes!
